Costume and Jewellery in Odissi

Costume is made up of silk or cotton temple bordered Orissa Saree and Jewellery is in silver. The saree is draped in a particular fashion creating a fan-shaped structure in the front. Temple border symbolizes the aesthetic nature of Odissi dance.

 

Distinctive feature is the broad three-tiered silver belt. The hair is tied in a bun at the back of the head and adorn with head dress made of Shola-pith, made to look like white flowers. The tahiya represents the gopuram.

 

Only white metal jewellery is worn in Odissi, including earrings that covers the whole ear and resembles the shape of a peacock's feather.

 

The Odissi dancer wears shola pith flowers around her hair bun and it is topped with a tiara of shola pith flowers representing the spire of Jagannath temple.

 

Dancer should keep their silver jewellery in any airtight container or bag, wrapped in cotton, so that they dont lose their shine and remain as new always.
